The government has granted financial autonomy to the Capital Development Authority (CDA). Now the civic body would generate funds itself for executing the mega-development projects in the future. The Minister for Interior Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao announced this while addressing the ceremony held in connection with groundbreaking of Kashmir Highway reconstruction here on Tuesday.

Sherpao said that the civic authority would be able to undertake all mega-development projects in Islamabad without prior permission of the government or allocation of money in Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

He maintained that granting of autonomous status to CDA would increase authority's performance and give fresh impetus to the ongoing development process in the federal capital.

Interior Minister has also announced that residents of Islamabad would feel visible change after one-and-a half year as we are going to kick-start at least two mega-projects every month besides beginning sector-wise small projects ie re-carpeting of road, drainage rehabilitation and water supply etc.

He directed the CDA that it should concentrate on opening of new sectors for providing housing facility to low income groups at affordable rates.

We are facing immense hardships in arranging international level events in Islamabad for which Convention Centre is being upgraded on the directives of President Musharraf.

President and premier have also shown keen interest in building of five star hotels, high-rise buildings in Blue Area and need to review Islamabad master plan that would give the metropolis a festive look.

He further added that I have decided to hold open katchery in every sector of the federal capital soon to resolve public problems with regard to civic amenities.

Giving the details of development project, Chairman CDA Kamran Lashari said that during the 1st phase-8.6 km damaged portion of Kashmir Highway is being rehabilitated/reconstructed at an estimated cost of Rs7.8 million.

This includes road from Zero Point to Golra More, linking Islamabad-Lahore M-1. Under the next phase, CDA has planned to realign Golra-G.T Road section.

About four additional concrete lanes would also be constructed for heavy traffic on the Kashmir Highway. All the work of Kashmir Highway would be completed at a cost of Rs 200 million.

Lashari informed that phase I would take six months, however, the contractor has been asked to ensure that the project would be completed well before time keeping in view commuters inconvenience.

Kashmir Highway was built in 1964, which was rehabilitated in 1988. It is being expanded due to heavy traffic.

State Minister for Interior Waseem Shahzad also spoke on the occasion.
